Hodgins knew it was Zack (Bones)
In the aftermath of Dr. Zack Addy’s confession and ultimate depature from Bones, something a lot of people overlooked a particularly great scene.
When I first watched this episode, I took nothing from the fact that Hodgins gave Zack morphine. I thought it was placed there to throw the fans off the trail.
But it turns out that Hodgins was being Hodgins. I’ll explain after the click.
With the sinister music setting the scene, I had all but written off this scene. But, I watched the season finale a second time and realized that Hodgins knew it was Zack when he was at the hospital.
He’d already discovered the lead levels pointed to his house and he obviously ruled out Angela and figured out it had to be Zack. Putting that together with the knowledge that no one could have switched the chemicals to start the explosion, he had to have realized Zack was Gormogon’s new apprentice.
And in that knowledge, he tried to save Zack by administering enough drugs to shut Zack up at the hospital. What looked like a sinister act was one of loyal friendship.
When viewed in that light, this scene stands out as one of the best scenes for a secondary character on Bones.
What are your theories? Think I might be mistaken? Let me know below.

I think its a great theory, I also had written off the scene because Hodgins was one of the suspects. Hodgins could have tried to shut Zach up just like, Zach had known that it was too much powder and that he would be seriously hurt but he did it anyway just to save Hodgins. Thanks for putting another spin on it :)

I’m glad you agree. With all the negativity surrounding the season finale, I thought it was nice to highlight one of the reason’s we all love Bones.

Not a stretch at all. That’s right on the money. That’s why Hodgens was so urgent in trying to knock him out. Though it probably wasn’t to cover it up; the egg head would have reasoned that the team would have figured it out. It was, most likely, to give Zack a bit more time with his friends. A bit more time to be looked upon as the normal Zack…

That was what i thought first time round.
He was trying to explain and Hodgins was just clicking that button everytime he was saying a word.
Angela kind of gave Hodgins a little look, but it seemed to be an understanding look, but was ANgela in on it?!
Hodgins WOULD do this for Zack because as he says, zack is his best friend.

Agreed. It made you think, Hodgins knows something, something he doesn’t want to acknowledge/accept or hear. He also made the comment that sometimes Friends have to step in for you.

Yeah, thats what i thought too, cause look at how close the two characters are, i think its very likely :)

You know, when I first saw this scene I thought that Hodgins was trying to shut up Zach. Zach looked like he was starting to divulge some type of information due to the pain and the more Zach talked the more Hodgins gave. I felt reaffirmed because Hodgins was a suspect and the more Zach talked the more he clocked the morphine, and Angela had this face of suspicion as he clicked the morphine. When he says “your best friends know when to dumb it down and step in” in the light of this theory makes a bit more sense, but besides this I dont think theres anymore evidence to prove this (although I completely agree with your theory!) :) AWESOME

I completely agree with your theory. I own all three seasons on DVD and while Pain in the Heart is my LEAST favorite episode, because Zack is my favorite character, I have seen it a handful of times. After each time, it became more clear that Hodgins did indeed know it was Zack. Hodgins is not incompetent; therefore, it would have been easy for him to put the pieces together: 1) Zack INSISTED that he’d be the one to add the monomer, NOT Hodgins 2) Lead levels (if I remember correctly – it’s been a while) in the water pointed to Hodgins’ house and the only three people on the inside who have access to his home are himself, Angela, and of course Zack. Simple process of elimination 3) Zack was the only one who had access to the chemicals and was the only one who could have switched them AND 4) Wasn’t Zack the one who “noticed” that the marks on the mandible were made by dentures??
Zack confessing in front of Hodgins and Angela would have put them in an incredibly awkward position, so Hodgins was not only protecting Zack, he was also protecting Angela. She shouldn’t have to hear that directly. Plus, Zack & Jack shared a deep, deep man love that made the dynamic duo epic in my mind. They are an irreplaceable pair.

i agree at frist i didnt see it but when it was revealed zack was gormogon/the masters assistent i knew that he knew and was giving his best friend more time zack was going to tell right then but hodgins didnt want them to know yet he knew they would figuire it out but he didnt want them to take zack away yet becouse if they did he would have had too say goodbye to him befor he was ready too he loved zack everyone did and in season four for quite a while hodgins wouldnt say king of the lab becouse it made him depreesed but eventually got over that and begain saying he’s king of the lab once again he even hated zack for a little bit even sweets got worried about him and when he went to see sweets he told him he hated zack for being such an idiot well at frist he said he hated everyone hodgins abandoned his conspiracy theory’s to replace them with hatered sweets said that he was proud of hodgins progress even though he hated everyone becouse it was hodgins own special way of of dealing with his pain like cam being mad anela crying and booth being happy that zack was’nt going to go to prison instead he’d go to a psyceatric hospital instead and in zack’s own words he became king of the looney bin while hodgins got the lab very good theory by the way i got it frist time around
