We only got a glimpse at Jim’s book on the last episode of The Office, but thanks to NBC, the full text of the 10-chapter book is available for all to see, though they did make a few errors. “The Ultimate Guide To Throwing A Garden Party”, written under the pen name, James Trickington, was the best part of the episode and we couldn’t avoid posting it.
We had Chapters 2, 4, and 9 read to us by Jim, and the final chapter referenced the closing ceremonies, but the rest is really unknown. After the jump, read every chapter of the book right here. And, if you noticed the mistakes in the book posted online, let us know, because we spotted a gigantic one.
According to NBC, here’s the full contents of the book. But, according to Jim on the episode ‘Garden Party’, there are some differences. Can you spot them?
The Ultimate Guide To Throwing A Garden Party
by James Trickington
Chapter 1
A proper garden party must be valeted, even if you have to park the automobiles in the hindmost part of your eerie cornfield.
Chapter 2
Announcing guests as they enter is the height of decorum. The more volume displayed, the more honour is bestowed upon everyone at present.
Chapter 3
Respectable dress is “Colonial tea party chic,” which includes but is not limited to hooped gowns, wigs and velvet breeches.
Chapter 4
Security should be intensive. Guests must bring a driver’s licence, passport, utility bills and go through a TSA-style screening process.
Chapter 5
Certainly do not provide napkins. Mannerly people never spill, and they will be vastly insulted if you imply they possibly could.
Chapter 6
Hire a brass band and have them play time-honored American favorites such as “Hey Mickey,” “Macarena,” “Peanut Butter Jelly Time” and so forth.
Chapter 7
Speak in a British accent. Think Anne Hathaway in that new romantic drama meets Madonna circa 1995. Your guests will be dazzled and intrigued.
Chapter 8
The host should present something spectacular to draw the attention of the guests, such as an ice sculpture or a pool filled with Italian wine.
Chapter 9
One of the host’s most important duties is as dance master. A proper courtly dance sets the tone for the entire afternoon.
Chapter 10
You must perform closing ceremonies that involve carrying lit torches. This will prove your flaming compassion for the perfect garden party.
So did you spot the differences? For one, Chapter 9 in the NBC version should have actually been Chapter 4. And Chapter 9 should have referred to the Tableau Vivant, which Dwight and his staff did portray. So, the book should have been 11 chapters, or NBC just didn’t pay attention. Either way, it’s a little disappointing. Any other errors spotted?
